I found myself in the center of a circle, where the ultimate flow and movement of a hula-hoop would begin to unwind and reveal to me the endless power of movement and dance. Today I am a professional hoop dancer dealing with dance and circus arts as an instrument for artistic expression and self empowerment. Hoop dance is often experienced as a very exotic, and energetic form of entertainment. My solo performances meet this common expectation, but my movement extends far beyond acrobatic performances and flashy tricks. I blur the line between entertainment and performance art by creating non-conventional hoop dance choreography that focuses on the magic of illusion, and the interaction between the hoop and my body. Combining the modern with the ancient I convey a timeless and familiar sense of culture through integrating modern and contemporary dance forms. Some of the modern influences within my movement utilize the acrobatic traditions of rhythmic gymnastics, and cirque de soleil esthetics. My movement is also inspired by tribal African rhythms, and the tradition of Native American Hoop Dance, using the symbolism of the hoop to weave together stories of life, creation, and universal emotions.
