Christopher Matthews is an American born choreographer and performance artist working out of London and currently participating in the Emerging Dance Artist Program at the Southbank Centre. He holds a BFA from New York University Tisch School of the Arts (2002) where during his time he started to dance for Laura Peterson. From 2001-2009, Christopher was a full company member in Laura Peterson Choreography and in 2005 held the position of Assistant Director till he resign to pursue a postgraduate degree. In 2010, he earned his MA in Choreography at TrinityLaban Conservatoire of Dance and Music where he developed an interest studying how we perceive the moving figure or image. These anatomical and semiological studies led to his methodology of intuitive research and curating practise of displaying research as performance medium in contrast to strong research product. In accomplishing this he started to bring his strong interest in visual art to the forefront of his creative practice by developing collaborations in research or ideas. Currently, Christopher is interested in exploring choreography and performance and the pursuit to what that entails. This has led him in to more visual art performance projects question the aspect of movement and choreography under the ideas of time, space and energy. He was a resident performer with the Hayward Gallery exhibition and tour of Move: Art and Dance from the 60’s. In the exhibition, he was working within Production a piece by Xavier Le Roy and Marten Spangberg and activated works by Simone Forti (Huddle, Hangers) and Mike Kelley (Test Room, 1990). In February 2010, he was the young figure in Roger Hiorns Untitled within the British Art Show 7: In the Days of the Comet presented at the Hayward Gallery. He has been in the workshop process for a new work by Tino Seghal that will premiere in 2012 at the Tate. Following this trend of work Christopher developed a durational solo Lay Me To Rest that was presented within the Lingering Whispers exhibition curate by Predrag Pajdic at the St. Pancras Church. This work was part of a collaborative research process with fellow performance artists Hrafnhildur Benediktsdóttir and Nathalia Mello within the collective Burrow.
