Darkroom Contemporary is a registered Non Profit Organisation (Reg. No. 089-552-NPO) operating in the field of performing arts. Its mission is to establish itself as a contemporary, experimental physical theatre performance company in South Africa and internationally. The company aims to foster collaboration between the various creative disciplines, including music, film, fine art, design and photography, and thereby opening up dialogue between the various fields as well as creating opportunities for skills exchange. The production and distribution of dance film forms a large part of the company’s creative offering, making them one of only a handful currently exploring this genre in South Africa. Darkroom Contemporary also runs a Youth Theatre Initiative programme, through which it offers exposure and training in physical theatre to youth from previously disadvantaged communities.
