The Experimental Media and Movement Arts Lab (EMMA) is a joint research project of the Department of Dance and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD). Launched in 2005, with funding from The College of the Arts, the project's first lab space "EMMA@ACCAD" is co-located with ACCAD's Motion Capture Studio.
EMMA is a media-smart teaching space, a lab for experimentation, and an intelligent stage for performance projects. We seek to foster interdisciplinary teaching and innovative performance practices in the College of the Arts by offering students and faculty access to a unique combination of creative research tools including a black box stage space with a sprung wood floor and Marley for dancing, a spiral track with hanging scrims, theater and video lighting, sound equipment, a video rack, multiple projectors, computers, and cameras. The space also includes a Vicon motion capture system, wireless virtual reality, video, and sensor equipment, and access to all of ACCAD's additional computer graphics hardware and software resources.
Research projects in the lab integrate the body and technology in myriad ways including but not limited to: multimedia dance and theater productions, creative media laboratories, performance art installations, experimentation in artist-driven tech tools development, musical recitals exploring the performers' physicality, experimentation with interactive technologies, lecture-demonstrations, courses that require projected media or video conferencing and more. The 2006–2007 academic year saw over a dozen events involving more than 100 students, performing for approximately 1000 attendees.
The EMMA Lab was founded with a three year grant from the College of the Arts and is supported by the Department of Dance and The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design.

im thinking of two things these days.... my rejection of screens (which includes, floors, objects, things. screen is a screen. "projection surface". why , how i have come to this . its kind of basic stuff, and its pretty obvious to most people, but still since it is a bit radical , i thought i would talk about it.
the other thing on my mind is the osc/dmx bridge i am working on. that is, controlling lights through movement. what i and some friends are dreaming up and why. so i feel like i have to write a couple of essays soon. im not sure this board is the right place, yet, but , sure, in the end,.
oh by the way, did you make any progress with the idea for a visit?
