IL FIORE DELLE MILLE E UNA NOTA
contemporary dance & music event
in Amsterdam and Urbino
3rd edition 2014
Curated by Kathleen Delaney Dance Co | Accademia Fisarmonicistica - a platform for research in the field of production and pedagogy of music and contemporary dance.
Supported by ICK Amsterdam Emio Greco | PC , Istituto Italiano di Cultura Amsterdam, Comune di Urbino - Assessorato alla Cultura, HangartFest, Pigini Factory, a.o.
The event gathers the results of one year of research and studies, opening up to other artists met along the way and with whom the artistic directors share their visions.
The title pays an homage to the film The Flower of the One Thousand and One Nights by Pier Paolo Pasolini , 1974, and the artistic choices are keeping on purpose the fragility of a the structure in which several performances, woven into a fine texture, create a bright tapestry, merging into a harmonious hymn to life.
The event holds every year the same attention to the variety of proposals, alternating moments of solo practice of music to ensemble works for music and dance, and this year features also a choir.
Looking in particular at the Italian scene, the event moves on its transgenerational dimension, involving artists of different ages and bringing their experience beyond national borders, with two Dutch premieres, this year at the Italian Cultural Institute May 3, 8 pm and at the Bimhuis Amsterdam on May 4 at 8,30 pm.
On the 3rd of may the Istituto Italiano di Cultura will host a concert by the Musicians of the Italian Accordion Academy (Vincenzo De Nitto, Fabio Palma, Andrzej Grzybowski, Przemek Wojchiechowski, Marco Pasculli, Ezio Testa) who will present a musical program with original and transcribed works for the classical accordion , an instrument gaining more and more relevance in contemporary music. Compositions by Ligeti, Tiensuu, Krzanowski, Jacomucci, Takahashi, Ganzer, Pärt, Bach, Ginastera, Vlasov, Taktakishvili, Komitas, Bizet, Kusyakov, Beltrami.
At the Bimhuis, on the 4th of may, Suite Venetienne / Follow me, a new creation by the choreographer Kathleen Delaney inspired by the intriguing multimedia text by the photographer Sophie Calle, who followed strangers to photograph them, and that in this peculiar text documents a trip in the labyrinthine city of Venice, made in incognito to follow a man met previously in Paris. Performed by Kathleen Delaney herself, and by Roberto Lori, the work is enhanced by the presence of Claudio Jacomucci and Daniele Roccato, respectively accordionist and double bass player who are considered to be among the most interesting musicians in the contemporary music scene.
On the same evening, two compositions for choir and accordions: Arcana, a piece for choir and ensemble of accordion, commissioned to Claudio Jacomucci in 2013, which explores vocal and instrumental musical traditions of some distant cultures (Inuit, Kecac, carnatic music and shakuhachi), and Olson III (1967), which can be considered one of the most powerful compositions by minimalist composer Terry Riley. Based on the repetition of short fragments of text , the piece is inspired by Zen philosophy, the Indian Raga , and the Balinese Gamelan. Olson III is played by the Coro Polifonico Durantino, Italian Accordion Academy and dancers Kathleen Delaney and Roberto Lori.
