Janessa holds a BFA in Choreography from Arizona State University where she received the Undergraduate Choreography Award for her work. She is the Artistic Director of Janessa Clark/KILTERBOX, founded in 2001 and based in New York City. Her work has been presented in many venues throughout New York including DancenOw at Joyce SoHo, Danspace Project/BRIC Studio, University Settlement, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Dixon Place and Dance New Amsterdam among many others. Her choreography also appeared in the film "Squeeze Play" (2004) directed by Cheidu Egbuniwe. With KILTERBOX she has toured her work to the Southwest, California, and New England and internationally to the UK, Sweden and Spain. Janessa has been the recipient of several prestigious arts grants including the Harlem Stage, Inc./Fund for New Work Grant, two Estrogenius commissions and the Women at Work Award from Gibney Dance. As a designer Janessa has created costumes for Alexandra Beller Dances, Jana Hicks/The Next Stage Project, Lexington Dance Collective, and the Performing Arts Center of Connecticut. She was also the costume manager for johannes wieland from 2004–2006. In her administrative life she was the Theater Programming Manager at Dance New Amsterdam from 2008-2011 and has been Company Manager for David Dorfman Dance, Alexandra Beller Dances, Deganit Shemy and Erica Essner Performance Co-Op. As an instructor she has been a faculty member of the Performing Arts Center of Connecticut and Dance New Amsterdam and is a certified Pilates instructor and Teacher training Supervisor for Steele Pilates. Janessa is the founder and operator of Pilates by Janessa. Outside of KILTERBOX, Janessa had enjoyed collaborating and performing with Gibney Dance, Sens | Noemie Lafrance, Laura Peterson Choreography, STEELEDANCE, Jana Hicks, Jenni Hong, M. Lindsay Smith, Maija Garcia, Michael Cole, Kenny Larson Ballet and others. Currently Janessa is pursuing her MA in Performance Practices and Research at London's Central School of Speech & Drama.
