Jennifer Essex is an exciting, innovative and imaginative choreographer from Toronto, Canada. Her work explores intimacy, new technology and interactivity. Previously she has been an artist in residence at the National Choreographic Centre and for Age Concern. In her work, she has collaborated with fabric technologists, poets, composers, mixed media and visual artists. Last year, her adaptation of Satyricon debuted in Peckham’s Last Refuge Theatre, and this summer she is developing a new work based on the social media and text message interactions of couples in love. Essex’s work breaks open the richness of human relationships through an exploration of language and metaphor. Drawing on contemporary iconography – video, film, fashion – her work is informed by a strong visual and theatrical sensibility. Powerful and strangely beautiful, her distinctive work questions what it means to be human. Pavilion Dance South West are supporting Jennifer Essex Dance in the development of a new work this summer. Using the raw material of text messages and social media interactions of couples at various stages in their romantic relationships, the company will be choreographing a new dance work that examines questions of intimacy, privacy and what we say to one another, versus our intended meaning. The piece asks what role touch plays in the development of all kinds of relationships, and how we can be touched by technology.
