Joao da Silva (born 1965 in Brazil) studied dance in Brazil, Sweden, Iceland, and at the ArtEZ institute for the arts, (former CNDO/EDDC) NL, where he studied, among others, release, improvisation and composition with Mary O’Donnell, Deborah Hay, Eva Karczag, Lisa Kraus, Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson, Peter Hulton, and Sally Sommers; in 2004 he graduated from the Neuro Linguistic Programming Center, New York City, where he achieved his NLP master practitioner status and in 2010 he obtained his Master Degree in Theater Science at the University of Utrecht. He has danced, among others, with and for Quilombo and Dance Alliance (Mary O'Donnell), and has choreographed a number of works, most recently a collaboration with artist Doran George (London, 2008). He has taught professionals in Europe, Israel, Asia and South America; he has been a lecturer at ArtEZ Dance Academy since 1995 and the head of the ArtEZ Master of Choreography program since 2000. He is a PhD candidate at the University of Utrecht, NL, where he is researching the nature of risk in dance improvisation.
