Juan Carlos Claudio Biography Juan Carlos Claudio was born in Puerto Rico in 1972. In 2009 he obtain his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Utah, Department of Modern Dance where he currently holds the position of Assistant Professor/Lecturer. His passion and respect for dance allowed him surpass his expectation in mentoring others students in the Department. As a consequence, Juan Carlos was awarded the Dee Winterton Award for mentoring and the 2009 University of Utah Student Teaching Choice Award for excellence in teaching. Juan Carlos holds his BS degree in Dance and Biology from Utah State University. In 1996 Juan Carlos became a member of the highly praised Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company until 2006. At the same time, he toured internationally, performing and teaching the works of Alwin Nikolais. In 2001-2002, Juan Carlos took a short break and moved to New York City where he danced with Sean Curran Company, Bill Young/Colleen Thomas & Dancers and Keith Johnson/Dancers among others. He has also appeared in local productions of Stephen Brown’s SB Dance and Stephen Koester’s Dance Koester Dance. Juan Carlos is known as an active artist in Salt Lake City having the pleasure of receiving for several years in a row, best male dancer. In 2007, Juan Carlos won his first choreographic competition A.W.A.R.D. which catapulted him to present his own choreographic and collaboration works at the Harare International Arts Festival (2008) in Zimbabwe and OPEN LOOK- International Dance Festival (2009) in St. Petersburg, Russia, Utah State University– Diversity Week (2010) in Logan Utah. He has also co-produced Momentum; A Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company Alumni Concert for last three years. Juan has always been curious about the dancing body and its ability to intermingle with technology. In, 2007 at Reel Dance for Camera intensive summer program Juan Carlos found an interest for dance films. This brought him the opportunity to collaborate with filmmaker Alejandro Valbuena. His short films collaborations have been screened at numerous festivals including: Dance Camera West– Los Angeles, Dance on Camera Festival– Salt Lake City, New York–DFA, Clermont Ferrand, Oberhausen, London, Basel, Sapporo, VIFF, and American Dance Festival– North Carolina.
