Judy Lieff, dance filmmaker, and teacher, earned her M.F.A. in dance & experimental film/video from the California Institute of the Arts following a career as a professional dancer. Judy has produced, directed, and edited many short dance films that have garnered awards and screened internationally. She is a six time grant recipient for dance/media projects and has over eight years of experience working in the film industry in both production and post-production. She has been documenting adapting dances for the camera for ten years for clients such as The New York Public Library Dance Collection, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brian Brooks Dance Company, Keely Garfield, Barnard College, and Dance Theater Workshop among others. In 2000, Judy received a National Dance/Media fellowship from the Pew Charitable Trusts. For the Dance On Camera 2002 festival, Judy produced and performed in a collaborative improvisational dance/video “happening” designed specifically for Remote; a new media art space equipped with more than 60 video cameras, broadcasting live within the location on more than 70 closed-circuit channels. She is currently in the final stages of post-production on an American Sign Language (ASL) Poetry documentary funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts. The film will be broadcast on the PBS series, Independent Lens, in their 2011/2012 season.
