Katia Engel, born in South Germany and based in Indonesia and Berlin works in the field of performance, installation, video, photography and documentary film. Besides her formal education in dance and movement at Dance Institute Bremen and Laban-Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies New York, she is trained in photography, sculpting and filmmaking. Her works in video, photography and performance have been presented at Intl. Film Festival Singapore, Intl. Dance Film Festival Tokio/Yokohama, Ark Gallery Jakarta, Kunstforum Köln/Germany, Art Center Nairs/Switzerland, Akademie der Künste/Berlin, Chashama Theatre/New York. In 2012, Katia started producing dance pieces in Indonesia. As artistic director, she collaborated with Pencak Silat performers from West Sumatra, who are also former members of Gumarang Sakti Dance Company. Their collaborative works have been presented at Intl. Dance Festival Jakarta in 2012 and 2014. Katia’s newest performance from starting to cut the wood in collaboration with a Yogyakarta based artists, one young dancer and one traditional mask carver, has been presented in Institute Francais Yogyakarta, as part of Jogja Art Week in June 2015.
