An avid and accomplished performer, "La Magdalena" is a professional dancer who divides her time between New York City and Seville, where she trains with the legendary gypsy families of Farruco, Vargas, Fernandez, and Manuela Carrasco amongst others. In 1993 Magdalena began her dancing career in New York City. Inspired by her mentors she began using her organic skills and educational background to teach people of all ages. By the mid 90's Magdalena had helped revive the local Flamenco scene, performing at popular venues such as Xunta, Alegrias, Helena's, Kaña, and El Teatro Espanol with Paco Milano. With a fundraiser in 2006 she was able to sponsor a singer from the small town of Ecija, Spain to New York City, revitalizing interest in flamenco "puro". Currently Magdalena can be found singing, dancing, and playing "cajon" on stages throughout the Northeast. She has appeared as soloist with Neville Dance Theater (NYC), Pasion y Arte (Pa), Flamenco Triana (Chicago), and most recently with De Luna a Lunares in Philadelphia. Magdalena receives choreography commissions and coaches opera singers for their roles in "Carmen". In Seville, Magdalena can be found performing alongside members of Familia de Pura, Fernandez, and del Gastor, where she dances "por fiesta" on the streets of her second home, Sevilla. In 2010 Magdalena will be featured in a documentary "Flamenco: Here and There" (Flamenco: Aqui y Ahi). Now creative director of her own company, Azulojos, she has recently been awarded grants from The Field and Fractured Atlas.
