Canadian born, Laura Ward has been active in the NYC dance community since 1990. In 1998 she founded Octavia Cup Dance Theatre, a contemporary ballet devoted to highlighting the strength of women and advancing awareness of women’s issues in the world through flavorful multi media productions that range from floridly cheeky to starkly vulnerable. Laura’s work has been performed in France, Scotland, Norway, and North America. Highlights from 2009 included new choreography for Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks commissioned by the Astoria Symphony and performed in Queens. The company also participated in the Rebound Dance Festival in New Haven, CT. In 2008 Octavia Cup presented the prescient show “Whistle Me Higher: Imaginary Dances from Bingo Palace” at the Theater for the New City. The company also appeared at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park in Joe Hurley’s Marc Bolan Tribute. Laura has shown work annually in New Choreographers On Pointe’s Previews at the 92nd St. Y since 2006 and at the Byrdcliffe Theatre in Woodstock, NY since 1999. In 2005 Octavia Cup was featured at the New York City Ballet’s 1st annual Wellness Weekend, Laura was also on several panels for this event. Laura creates both artistic and commercial videos. She is on faculty at the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies and Equinox.
