Maíra Spanghero is dance academic and dance critic. Graduated in Psychology (1994), she received her MA (2000) and PhD (2005) from Catholic University of São Paulo (Brazil) in Communication and Semiotics studies. During 2009-2010, she was academic visitor at School of Arts in Brunel West London University where she developed the post doctorate research entitled “Choreographic Figures and Patterns: Embodied Practices of Dance and Mathematics”. The intent was to understand how an abstract mathematical concept can be transformed and used to develop new choreographic form and structure. This research was conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Contemporary and Digital Performance and is financed by CAPES, Ministry of Education of Brazil. Maíra Spanghero has published “A Dança dos Encéfalos Acesos” (Itaú Cultural, 2003), about Group Cena 11 and the relationship between dance and technology, and has developed, with Nacho Durán, the concept of “pocket dance” to portable devices. Videos can be seen in this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpZrsV2QJLs&feature=related She currently teaches at the School of Dance at Federal University of Bahia where she is research coordinator. She is also working on a series of collaborative practice led research projects entitled “Dancing numbers”, which involve three axes: mathematics teaching through the use of resources from the body and dance, systems of notation and choreographic projects.
