Marianela Boan is an internationally known choreographer, recognized as one of the most important artists of contemporary Cuban dance. She is considered a leader of the Hispanic-American dance vanguard. Her revolutionary style “Contaminated Dance” radically merges all the arts in dance performance to produce an original form. As choreographer, dancer and professor Boán has worked in more than 40 countries around the world and created more than 50 choreographies. She is the director of the Contemporary Dance Proyect; ProDanCo, of the Minister of Culture of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She got an MFA in Dance from Temple University in Philadelphia and worked in this institution from 2005 to 2010, teaching Composition, Creative Process, Improvisation and Repertory. As a member of the Cuban National Contemporary Dance Company, 1973-1988, founder director of DanzAbierta, Cuba, 1988-2003 and BoanDanz Action, USA, 2005-2010 she have awarded numerous prizes. Her work has been presented at several venues and festivals including Grec, Madrid en Danza, Cadiz and Fall Festivals in Spain, The Place Theater in London, Festival of Nations in Switzerland, Chaillot Theater in Paris, Le Hague Festival in Holland, Cirque Royal de la Monnaie in Belgium, L’Arena de Verona and Goldoni Theater in Venetia, Italy, Global Dance and Summer Theater in Germany, Fringe Edinburgh and Glasgow Festivals, Scotland, Odin Theater in Denmark and the most important venues in Eastern Europe, Latin America, Caribbean, India, Nigeria and Japan. She has been a Titular Professor at the High Institute of Arts in Cuba (ISA) and has contributed to the education of several generations of Cuban and Latin American dancers. Since year 2000, she has developed an intense work in USA as a teacher, choreographer and performer working for companies and institutions including the American Dance Festival, Bates Dance Festival, NYU Politic and Performance Hemispheric Encuentro and Performance Studies Department, Barnard College, Columbia University, Dance Theater Workshop, Anchorage Alaska University Ensemble, Alfred College, Wake Forest University, Florida International University, Asheville Dance Theater Company, FITLA Los Angeles, Hedwig Dances, Chicago, Princeton University, Joyce SoHo Theater, NY, etc. In year 2005 she founded BoanDanz Action Company in Philadelphia and created the pieces “False Testimony”, “Voyeur” and “Decadere” that have been presented at La MaMa Theater in NY, 2006, Bates Dance Festival 2007, Mexico International Festival, 2010, Bahía International Theater Festival, Brasil, 2010, Bogota, Colombia, 2007 and 2010, Live Arts Festival, Philadelphia 2007 and 2010 and Casa de Teatro, Dominican Republic 2007 y 2010 among other venues. She is a recipient of a Rocky Award 2008, commissions and grants including from Cuban Artists Foundation (CAF), Painted Bride Arts Center, National Performance Network (NPN), Dance Advance, Independence Foundation. She is member of the International Dance Council (CID).
