Martyn Coutts is a performance artist working across live art, dance and theatre. His work deals with consciousness, games and liveness. Martyn has made a series of solo and duet performance works dealing with the body, architectural space and technology, these include Inside (VCA, Melbourne 2004), Loading Zone (Nextwave, Melbourne 2004) and Bunker (Taipei Artist Village, Taiwan 2006). His collaboration with Sam Routledge as the performance company Blood Policy has yielded the work Operation (Nextwave 2006, Full Tilt 2007). In 2007, Martyn created the multimedia game event Wayfarer at Performance Space, Sydney with artist Kate Richards. This work combined interactive software, improvised physical performance and complex audience interactivity. This work was shortlisted for the 2009 Ars Electronica Prix. In 2008 Martyn begun a collaboration with Willoh S. Weiland as Deadpan. They have shown works at Electrofringe 2008, at the National Live Art Symposium ‘this is the time…this is the record of the time…’ in Perth WA, 2008, the Tiny Stadiums Festival, Sydney 2009 and Nighttime at Performance Space, 2009. Deadpan is the recipient of an Asialink grant to Beilab, China and NES residency in Iceland, both in 2010. Martyn has performed in two of pvi collective’s works tts:australia and reform both in Melbourne and he completed a three month Australia Council funded residency at pvi’s new studios CIA in Perth, 2008. He also performed in Anna Tregloan’s Black at the Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne in 2007. As a video artist Martyn has created systems and content for Brian Lipson, James Saunders, Luke George, Kelly Ryall, Is Theatre and Tasdance.
