Melanie Aceto is a modern dancer, choreographer and educator. Her research interests include investigating models for teaching dance composition and modern technique and creating resources for both. Commissioned by Dance Masters of America, Inc., Melanie and colleague Professor Jonette Lancos have created a three-level modern dance curriculum with both a written and practical certifying examination. Her research has been published in the Journal of Dance Education and has been presented at the National Dance Education Organization’s national conferences in New York City and Tempe, Arizona. Current projects include Choreographic Lineage, a web-based resource presenting the lineage of choreographers and dance artists in American Modern Dance. Melanie also has a passion for choreographic preservation. She was commissioned by the Dance Heritage Coalition to write a scholarly assessment of the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company detailing the current state of their archive. Melanie’s creative interests are in interdisciplinary solo and large group works. Melanie’s group work Swarm...Churn (music by Marc Mellits) is the subject of the documentary Time to Dance by filmmaker Yuichiro Yamada. Recent projects include the creation of “Cloud”, a work for six dancers and 3,000 square feet of plastic, made in collaboration with architect/designer Michael Rogers, as well as a new solo for piano and dancer made in collaboration with composer Megan Beugger. Melanie’s work has been performed internationally in Toronto, Guatemala and Germany and nationally at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, in Las Vegas, Virginia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania, in Ohio as part of the Heidelberg New Music Festival and numerous venues in Rochester and Buffalo, NY. New York City performances include the Studio Museum in Harlem, REVERB dance festival (Ailey CitigroupTheater), Cool NY and D.U.M.B.O Dance Festivals (John Ryan Theater), American Dance Guild (Ailey CitigroupTheater), Uptown Performance Series, Underexposed Festival (Dixon Place), Depot Dances (Depot Theater), and Hatch. Melanie works extensively with contemporary composer Mark Olivieri co-directing the Vision of Sound Concert of Live Music and Dance; a series of collaborative concerts with the Society for New Music, featuring original contemporary music and choreography, now in its eighth season performing throughout upstate NY. Melanie earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in dance from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. melanieaceto@yahoo.com 585-201-0656 www.melanieacetocontemporarydance.com
