Nalini is an acclaimed dancer, choreographer and teacher of Indian dance, Bharatanatyam and has performed throughout India and the United states for over three decades. She is currently the co-artistic director of The Spilling Ink Project, a Washington DC based dance company that has an artistic purpose to interpret, create, perform and present works rooted in two of South India’s classical dance forms, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. She worked for 15 years as a volunteer at Udhavi, in India, a center for children with various physical and mental disabilities, where she encouraged children to dance and move to music to improve their general health and well being. Her need to acquire better skills in order to use dance therapeutically, led her to the United States in 2008 where she pursued and graduated from a dance/movement therapy program at Drexel University, Philadelphia. Nalini also holds an MA degree in performing arts (Bharatanatyam), and a BA degree in Indian classical music from Indian universities. At present, Nalini is a dance/movement therapist at Saint Elizabeths hospital. She provides direct clinical treatment services in dance/movement therapy to general and forensic psychiatry inpatients as a component of the hospital’s overall program of mental health care and treatment. Using creativity, spontaneity and sensitivity, Nalini facilitates recovery-based dance therapy groups that value and reflect cultural and ethnic diversity, empowering individuals in care towards positive change. Nalini is also pursuing the CMA program through LIMS New York at the University of Maryland in DC.
