Rosanna Irvine is a choreographer working in performance and digital video often in collaboration with others. Her work is interdisciplinary involving dance, gesture, text and mediated image (both live and pre-recorded). Since 2006 all her performance work has engaged with the interface between the live and mediated image. The present ongoing choreographic research project, Degrees of Freedom (DoF), engages with practices that extend relational possibilities within the work’s production and dissemination, and seeks to produce (and reveal) conditions for acts of co-authorship and agency by performers and public. DoF is an evolving score with each new version responding to a new site and new grouping of people. There have been six versions of DoF to date (December 2009) including in an empty theatre, the hallway of a public building and a shopping centre. The constant generative nature of its production actively calls into question notions of fixed boundaries and fixed product. A breaking down of the ‘fourth wall’ of the performance space has been addressed in recent versions through the use of live video feed and audience movement between simultaneous versions. The work utilizes responsive choreographic structures, which call on heightened qualities of attention in performers. These are developed through specific training practices which develop perceptual awareness and which propose perception as a form of thinking. Recent work has been funded by Art Council England and regional and national dance agencies. Rosanna received the Swindon Danslab residency to work with Peter Anderson in 2007 and a Glasgow Dance House Creative Lab at Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow in 2009. www.rosanna-irvine.co.uk
