Selene Carter is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance. Her work integrates improvisation, site specific performance, interdisciplinary collaboration and reconfigurations of historic dances. A certified instructor in the Bill Evan’s Laban based modern dance technique, she received Chicago’s highest honor for dance, the Ruth Page Award for her improvised dance performances. Her writing on dance improvisation was published in Bodies, Identity, Performance and Technology: Practices of Empowerment, Embodiment and Technicity, Palgrave-Macmillan, London, 2012. She was chosen as one of sixteen choreographers to participate in Doug Varone’s Devices, a choreographic intensive that resulted in the CHIN (choreographic intensive) Festival, presented at the Harkness Dance Center/92nd Street Y in September 2014. Selene’s choreography is slated for presentation in 2015 by the Regional Alternative Dance Festival, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Breaking Ground Festival Tempe, Arizona and in Wild Space Dance Company’s spring concert, Reckless Wonders, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
