An open space at the intersection of theatre, dance and performance, where instruction and learning are combined with experimentation and praxis. We see Tatwerk as a playground for contemporary approaches to the performing arts. In using the word playground, we voice our fundamental concern with pursuing approaches free of dogma and inhibition, in a space where our work can originate from − and aims to further elaborate on − the intersection of theatre, dance and performance. We approach the performing arts from a bodily perspective. We believe that our strength and asset is the body, and our language is body movement. The body is stage and platform, medium and matter. Every performance is an enquiry into the aesthetics and boundaries of body strength and expression. In centering attention on the body, we aim to transcend the spoken word. Moreover, as a space for exploring post-dramatic theatre, we also engage in experiments that attempt to abandon the concept of drama altogether. Tatwerk lives and breathes through the commitment, ideas and work of experts − scholars, performers, dancers, directors − and students alike. With everyone who participates in Tatwerk, we encourage the questioning of boundaries − personal, within the field, according to expectations and conventions − and the setting of new ones. We hope that experts and students will make themselves at home at Tatwerk, and work with us to transform the ways in which theatre, dance and performance − as well as Tatwerk as a space − are expressed and can develop in the future.
