BIOGRAPHY
Vânia Gala
Vânia Gala is Angolan-portuguese. She studied at E.D.D.C. (European Dance Development Center) - Arnhem, Netherlands and at Trinity Laban Conservatoire for Dance and Music (MA choreography with Distinction). Her choreographic work - Automatic Id (AID) has been performed since its premiere in Angola, Portugal, Norway, Germany, Ireland, Great Britain and Russian Federation. In 2005(AID) was awarded with “Best Female Performance” at the Dublin Fringe Festival, was part of Aerowaves Festival at the Place- Robin Howard Theatre, London and of the 1st Trienal of Luanda (Angola). In 2007 she performed at the 1st African Pavillion at the Venice Biennale. MiamiLuanda premiered at Teatro Académico Gil Vicente and was presented at the Portuguese Platform for Performative Arts 09’ curated by Rui Horta. 8º10'30" was performed at TAGV and at Centro Cultural de Belém in 2010. More recent collaborations include Sonia Boyce (artist part of Tate collection), curated by Paul Goodwin (Tate) presented at Centro Cultural de Belém, and Georgia Scherman Projects, Toronto. In 2012 she created “Invited Guests”, performed at Bonnie Bird Theatre, London. “Cooling Down Signs” a recent Pan-european commission by Beyond Front@ premiered at the Dance Week Festival in Zagreb and was presented in Slovenia, Austria with planned tour for 2014 in Hungary. More recently she was part of Choreodrome with “35 Days of Nothing to Say” presented at The Place, London. This latest on-going research “35 Days of Nothing to Say” is an attempt to further advance strategies for a choreography of “a less inhabited Body”. Current research interests are disembodiment, interpassivity and present conditions of spectatorship. Gala-me - a production company created in 2007 to support her creations has produced Coimbra- [d], a Dance video Festival, Semana[d]ança an International monthly event in dance teaching and Corpus Lab an intensive teaching program in contemporary dance in Teatro Académico Gil Vicente.
