Yanira Castro is a Puerto Rican born, Brooklyn-based director/choreographer, collaborating with performers and designers under the name, a canary torsi. We work in a multiplicity of spaces: from warehouses and cellars to the stage, embedding dances within visual & sound installations where the audience’s presence dramatically impacts the work. We have been presented in New York by Dance Theater Workshop, Performance Space 122, The Chocolate Factory, and EMPAC, among others, and have toured nationally and internationally. In 2010, the entire team won a Bessie for the performances of Dark Horse/Black Forest in the public bathroom of the Gershwin Hotel. Yanira has received several fellowships and awards for her work including: NEFA’s National Dance Project, The Jerome Foundation, MAP Fund, ArtistNe(s)t, Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Fellowship and Maggie Allesse National Center for Choreography.
