Since 1997, the Brazilian artist has lived and worked in Switzerland. Her creations for her Zurich-based Gisela Rocha Company include “Go Behind,” “Re Mind” and “Golden Boys,” which were co-produced with Theaterhaus Gessneralle. “Itself” premiered during the festival “Zürcher Theaterspektakel 2005.” With Tanzhaus Wasserwerk, she created “Bloom” in 2007. “White on White” (2009) was co-produced with Theater Winterthur and Tanzhaus Wasserwerk.
Within her company Gisela collaborates with a multitude of different artists: musicians, actors, singers, architects, and martial arts practitioners. She likes setting up large-scale dialog between dancers and these varied artists. Rocha’s passion and curiosity about philosophy, psychology, film, and literature are easily recognized in her pieces. Themes of memory, reflections on time, the madness of the mind, love and death, and circles of life are topics in her work. Her main approach is to blend strong existential questions with humor and beauty. Here deep emotions are mixed with lightness and beauty, allowing her audience to laugh and cry at the same time…While Gisela draws direct inspiration from her dancers, she considers music an essential element in her creations and often works with a composer.

For The last eight years Rocha has found yoga to be an important source of research and dedication. She is developing a combination of dance, yoga , and dynamic bio-energetic technique to apply in her creative warm up.

Gisela Rocha`s work has been warmly received by enthused audiences as well as by the press. It has been performed in Germany, France, Switzerland, Egypt, Brazil, the Netherlands and the USA. She is currently working on a new piece for Introdans, which will premiere September 2010, and is invited to choreograph a ballet for their 40th anniversary in 2011. In 2012, Rocha will stage a remake of “Paradise.”
