John Sherman Lathram lll (b. 1962- Lexington KY) is a mixed-media artist whose work incorporates many aspects of technology: digital photography, video, robotics, biological systems and computer software. Being an HIV positive artist has been influential in the direction and evolution of his artistic exploration. His work incorporates and exaggerates the poetic juxtaposition of the social expectations between perceived reality, and “real” reality, one that exists and one we are taught or have faith in its notion. His current photographic studies explore perceived body image of fringe subcultures as defined by historical essays and articles as well as current socio-political events. Mr. Lathram’s works discuss the complexities current social issues and expected perceptions of “normal, versus our own inner visual identity. His photo-essay book, The “Ladies” of Ohio, - Digital Diva’s will be published in June 2010. In it he documents the female illusion culture in Columbus, Ohio. It will coincide with select images from the book to be exhibited in larger than life format will be held at Arts Initiative in Columbus as well. His works have appeared in New York, under well-received reviews in the New York Times, as well as several Columbus venues. Mr. Lathram graduated from The Ohio State University in 2004 with an MFA in Art and Technology. He has been an adjunct professor at The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College. He has served as youth lecturer for the Wexner Center Summer Youth Art Series and is a member of several local and national Arts organizations.
