On September 18, 2012, dancer and choreographer Faustin Linyekula presented a new solo work, titled Le Cargo, in its New York premiere. This performance was part of the 2012 Crossing the Line Festival of the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF), and co-presented by the Museum for African Art. Following the performance, Linyekula sat down with the Museum for African Art to discuss his work. In this video, the interview with Linyekula is interspersed with footage from Le Cargo taken from a performance at the Centre National de la Danse. In the raw and intimate Le Cargo, Faustin Linyekula examines his personal story within the context of his native Congo’s rich and tumultuous history. Infused with potent music and his powerful personal narrative, Faustin beautifully investigates his relationship with dance, the physical language through which he has told his country’s stories for a decade, as he searches for traces of this brutal history on his body.
