I fully appreciated the sound of the swing creaking back and forth. It was one of those pieces where quiet sounds, less sounds were fully enhancing. Maybe have the dancer creak as well when swinging her arms or somehow add the swing affects to the dancer. I especially appreciated hearing the swinging noises and wind when the camera is on the swing, moving back and forth. The sound at the end with the feet seemed a little cartoon-ish, perhaps some other sort of sound would make that ending seem more real and connect to the swinging of the body and swing.
I was impressed that you recorded al the sound seperate, but I still long for more when I watched, I just didn't know what. For a suggestion, I think you could have tried to play with adding different sound then the normal image, it could have been intresting.
Great job on the sound recording! I appreciated the swinging sounds, they seemed necessary/natural. I know some people in class mentioned that they noticed a difference between the sound and the visual, but I didn't :). I'm glad I could hear the other environment noises as well, but I agree with Tori here in that they could have progressed into something more.
Subtle. Soft. Eerie. I am impressed that you recreated this sound--nice effort and well done. The movement of the camera alongside the swinging dancer promotes such a strong and clear idea that if you had added a non-subtle sound layer into this, I might have been overwhelmed (but maybe not...).
As the piece progresses, I felt that the sound should progress as well. Thus, the airplane came at the right time. But maybe experiment with another way to build the sound--introduce the sound of kids playing in the background, whistling winds, etc... up to you really.
Also, I mentioned it in class: the sound of the dancer's footwork on the wood-chips was a little too fake for me--perhaps you could have recorded it with the feet more at a distance.
I am going to second kiki's amazement at your badass sound recording skills Dahlia. Nicely done. I think the sound adds this subtle component that makes the piece feel very real to me. The volume I think is key here and I was struck by how natural the sounds were to me a viewer. Especially since they were not recorded before I was never ruffled or displeased or found any issues with how the soundscore and film synced up.
I won't lie, the film makes me feel nauseous,but that's because I get sick on swings. I think what I'm trying to say is that I compliment your film because it gives me such a kinesthetic experience of being on a swing and feeling those movements paralleled so beautifully in Aly's movement was a powerful and effective viewing experience for myself.
The only thing that strikes me as something that doesn't fit is the last spin sequence. The volume becomes much louder for me with her feet and for once her movements are not paralleled in the actions of the swing and I wonder why she breaks from her closeness with the that is established by the build of the film. The tone changes in a way as she spins off the screen and leaves the still swing behind. What motivates this exit?
Really impressive that you recorded all of this sound after the fact. There could have been some oppurtinities to experiment with other unnatural noises or brining the swing noises to the dancer. In terms of the video itself, I missed the shot of her hair swinging! You obviously worked hard on making this sound and it shows!
I liked the way you add a pleasant squirky sound into your video and make it lively. All the sounds in this video were clear, pleasant, real and at a reasonable level (as the sound of the wind). You made a wise choice not to add the swings's sound to all the shots. I could see the swing was not swinging in all your shots. However you can find a way to make it smoothier, not just a sudden switch from that nice squirky sound to (almost) silent. Still, I appreciated with your experience with sound recording!
