karohano (2008) , meaning "pieces" in sesotho, depicts urban dance energy with satirical and ironic gestures. shot in downtown johannesburg south africa, the dancers from inzalo dance & theatre co (south africa) and vahinala dance company (madagascar) engage with their environment revealing some bits and pieces of the newtown landscape. shot in three hours by ginslov with a small sony handycam, without city "permissions", it was a matter of "fast in and out", with guards pestering us to leave whilst a crowd had grown to see the "boys get down and dirty". this video work was shortlisted for the cinedans jury award 2008 and was shown in nyc at the american dance festival, dance on camera festival january 2009. this version will be shown at the "city breath project", all across south africa during 2009.
