Interview
A former graduate in Animation from the Royal College of Art, Iain Gardner had his introduction to the animation industry as an apprentice on Richard Williams' unfinished Masterpiece The Thief and the Cobbler. (My first professional animation can be seen here - the hoop of fire around 1:22 - 1:32!)
All of his films, as well as his student films, have been screened at International Film Festivals, including Annecy, Edinburgh, Stuttgart and Hiroshima.
Throughout this time, he has lectured on 2D animation at Newport, Edinburgh, Vancouver, Dundee and
Beijing, with his animation techniques discussed in The Animation Bible published in 2008.
He was also the recipient of an alt-w bursary to explore creating animation via mass participation -- a video he made to test this idea scored over a quarter of a million hits on YouTube.
Iain was the Chair of the Scottish Animation Group throughout 2008 and is the animation programmer for
the 64rd Edinburgh International Film Festival.
In 2008, he directed 2x5min animated films with school children in Wales, leading workshops about story telling and animation with Flycatcher Films. Mary and the Miners won First Light's Best Animation 2010.
Recipient of the Friends of the Royal Scottish Academy Bursary 2008.
Iain recently collaborated on Juraj Korec's HABITAT for the Dresden Tanzplan.
Iain's 4mations Digital Short film, THE TANNERY screened at the 64 International Film Festival.
