Concert for computer and piano trioCYNETart_03transit, 12.10.2003, Festspielhaus HellerauCello: Matthias Lorenz, piano: Stefan Eder, violin: Uta Maria Lempert, live-computer: Joel RyanChamber music is based on the idea of equality of the participants. It may well be that one voice is leading at a particular time, another voice leads at another time but everything loses meaning and coherence if played as a single voice. In that, there is no difference tonight: it is neither computer music which, more or less by chance, uses the sounds of a piano trio as material, nor is it a trio concert with sound alienations. It is much more like ONE complex instrument which requires several players. Electronic sound processing has recently become so fast that all the players can react with the same speed. The opportunities to further the musical development in improvised parts are equal, even though they might find different technical expressions. There is no hierarchy between the different parameters that can be changed. Every alteration of the instrumental sound and every change in the processing has a direct impact on the result. Any change, no matter where it occurs, asks each player to react. Such a reaction might include playing with or against the other, returning to or even departing from earlier arrangements.Similar to trees, computers are no musical instruments. However, both can be handled in a way that allows for something that collocates with music: playing. And listening.
