The symposium and artistic programme Actionable Image: Agency of Image, Performance of Body, Apparatus of Spectating are a continuation of BADco.'s interest in relating performance and image. More concretely, they were motivated by our recent installation work Responsiblity for Things Seen that was presented in 2011 within the Croatian participation at the Biennale di Venezia. The work required us, in the absence of performers in the exhibition, to pursue the idea of 'theatre by other means' and to custom develop a database video system that unfolds a particular nexus of body, image and technology. The work presented in Venice was followed up in February by the performance Black and Forth, a performance that itself is premissed conversely on translation of cinematic procedures by means of theatre.

With Actionable Image we will bring together a number of prominent international and local artists and scholars working in performing arts, visual arts and film to continue with the exploration of experimental encounters between the image and the body - two material modalities of expression whose encounters in our age are predominantly arranged, composed and mediated by means of visual technologies.

Within the scope of this exploration and in the programme of the symposium you'll be able to hear presentations and talks by Jonathan Beller (US), Maaike Bleeker (NL), Andrea Božić (HR/NL), Scott deLahunta (US), Vlatka Horvat (HR/UK), Rosanna Irvine / Katrina Brown (UK), Sonja Leboš (HR), Donna Szoke (CA), Manuel Vason (IT/UK), Jasmina Založnik (SI), Stephen Zepke (NZ/AT) and BADco. You'll also be able to see an expanded cinema performance by Bruce McClure (US), a performance-lecture by Bojan Đorđev & Siniša Ilić (RS), and see the installation Responsiblity for Things Seen and the performance Black and Forth by BADco.
