SCREENING:DANIEL CONRAD: AN EVENING OF DANCE FILMMAY 15 Friday 7 PMDaniel Conrad will be in attendance to introduce his films, as the Film Center screens SECOND NATURE (1993), a duet of four bodies utilizing superimpositions; SUBWAYS: 5 VARIATIONS ON THE THEME BY RILKE (2001), an exploration of boundaries filmed in the subways of Prague; 7 UNIVERSAL SOLVENTS (2004), in which human transformation occurs across the solvents of water, fire, tigers, children, alcohol, paint and air; AFTERNOON OF THE CHIMERAS (2006), filmed in a wilderness landscape, forcing the dancers to invent original ways of moving; and ABOARD THE PATER NOSTER (2008) —winner of a Judge's Award at last year's Northwest Film & Video Festival—in which cycles of life are played out on a doorless elevator. This presents inherent creative challenges: film cuts the world into shots from many angles; dance-on-stage is performed as a continuum from one angle. How can the two be successfully brought together into a truly hybrid and dynamic form? This workshop for filmmakers of all genres, and for choreographers and dancers with an interest in integrating film into their work, helps participants to digest and experiment with the components and methods which offer creative solutions: camera angles and movements, non-stage locations, re-choreography into fragments with “sticky ends,” superimposition and more. Film clips illustrating critical concepts (including the instructor’s own work) will be screened and discussed prior to considerable hands-on practice with camera and lights in a studio where dance performer Linda K. Johnson will serve as on-camera performer. Appropriate for filmmakers and dancers of all levels. Documentary and fiction film directors are especially encouraged, as the dance film genre presents the opportunity to strengthen compositional skills around structure, texture and movement, in an environment where plot, dialog, and rhetoric are not the main repertoire.
