Dubbed “Interactive performance pioneers” by the New York Times, Troika Ranch co-founders Mark Coniglio and Dawn Stoppiello will give a talk about their pioneering work to integrate interactive technology with live performance at Artconnect Berlin!!!
The talk will begin with with reflection on their innovative past works in which they used custom sensory systems to allow the movements and vocalizations of dancers to interactively generate video, sound and light.
Then they will offer a detailed exploration of their most recent creation ‘loopdiver’ – which premiers in Berlin on Oct 18, 19 + 20 at the Uferstudios in Wedding.
‘loopdiver’ began with a simple idea: to explore looping as the core structure of a dance performance. Using a software composition and looping tool created by Coniglio, the duo transformed a video of a fully realized five-minute performance into a forty-five minute video “score” with nearly 3,000 edits. They then turned the computer screen around and gave their six dancers an impossible task: to memorize and perform exactly what they saw on screen. On stage in loopdiver, the digital materials from the original video (music, video imagery, and theatrical lighting) maintain the precision and perfection of a computer. But the dancers can neverachieve perfection because they are human. When placed together on stage, we see the performers in a constant struggle to live up to an unforgiving, externally imposed machine rhythm.
