Existing somewhere between performance art, avant-garde theatre and spiritual practice, it is now mostly characterized by incredibly slow movements, grotesque, taboo or transcendent imageries and subject matters, white body paint, heightened physical and emotional states and no standard styles. Butoh is ultimately a free form, concerning existences, and is useful in all practices.
