This vigorous class combines the virtuosity of classical technique and the release of post-modern dance with Wolcott’s own idiosyncrasies. The result is a quirky and vigorous aesthetic. The class begins with a warm-up focusing the mind on sensory awareness to see the body from a fresh perspective and open ourselves up to new possibilities in movement. Inserted into a classical structure, this approach will be taken through plies and tendus to the more advanced constructs of training teaching the mind and body to work smarter, not harder. By exploring the physics of body weight through drops, catches, and turns, students may develop a technique that is both dynamic and nuanced. Phrase work includes gesture, patterns of flight and fall, inversion and performance considerations. Material for this class is drawn from various techniques and movement styles including Limon, hip-hop, ballet, Gaga, and pop culture. Sense of humor required.
