Combi-queen Jill Sigman (aka Djurdja Performantsartova), known for her arresting combinations of movement, sound, and potent visuals, premieres the new performance work, ZsaZsaLand-- part dance, part club, part installation. ZsaZsaLand runs for three weekends: Friday-Sunday, February 6-8, 13-15 and 20-22, 2009 at Office Ops in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Performances begin at 8pm. Tickets are $15 and are available in advance through SmartTix [www.smarttix.com or (212) 868-4444]. A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door. The performance run will be followed by ZsaZsaLand: Aftermath, a related free installation February 26-28, 6-9pm with live art events at 7pm.Choreographed, conceived and designed by Jill Sigman, with live sound mixing by the DJ joro-boro, and performance by Jill Sigman, Toby Billowitz, Donna Costello, Mary Suk and others, ZsaZsaLand is a darkly comic commentary on decadence and decay, commercialism and cultural cannibalism, packaging and product.Lighting design is by Aaron Copp.Sigman’s invented ZsaZsaLand (sometimes known as Zsazsaria) is a lost culture, a distant future, an alchemy machine, reclaimed land, and a bad dream. The work is an excavation of our culture; an archaeological experiment linking now and never, real and unreal; a landfill built out of colliding pieces of psyche and experience—kitsch, folk dance, fetishes, Balkan music, rituals, bones, and youtube videos – where shimmying and fake flowers abound. Check out the blog [http://thinkdance.wordpress.com] to glimpse the psychic landfill.
