Lia Rodrigues, a choreographer and activist from Rio de Janeiro, plays a key role in contemporary dance in Brazil. Her decision to set up a studio in a favela in Rio de Janeiro underlines her aim of interweaving art and social change. On her first visit to Dresden Lia Rodrigues will be showing two pieces which demonstrate the wide range of her artistic work. Rodrigues’ presentation will be accompanied by film showings.

In her new piece Pororoca Lia Rodrigues confronts us with the radicalism of her body language. The Pororoca (“great noise”) is a tidal bore occurring at the mouth of the Amazon and shooting down the river with incredible destructive force for several hundred kilometres inland. This production is based on this violent natural phenomenon. Physicality bursting its banks meets painfully fragile dependency
