Physical Cinema Master Class 2009Dancing for the Camera/Filming with the BodyLutz GregorSan Quirico d‘ Orcia (Tuscany/Italy)30 August - 5 Septembermail@lutz-gregor.comwww.lutz-gregor.comIn this Video Dance Workshop we will work on both movement and filmmaking to create choreographies as physical stories told for the camera. In the first part of this workshop we will work on some basic exercises in visual perception and physical awarness as well as the synchronisation of movement and view to examine the relation between the human eye and the camera. We will develop a hand held camera work in which the camera doesn't watch the movement from outside but dances itself - a camera training useful especially for documentary filmmakers. This leads us into improvised shooting of improvised movement and later into precisely constructed shots of choreographed movement.Based on a detailed storyboard we will translate the rhythm, dynamics, dramaturgy of dance into the language of film – Physical Cinema. The final product will be a plan-sequence of 2 - 3 min. of a choreographed movement duet shot on location. We will discuss as well specific questions of ‘Video Dance’, such as inter-dependance of space and movement style, narrative and non-linear dramaturgy, the dancer as actor. All the participants will move and shoot in front of and behind the camera and train their physical awareness and skills of improvisation. At the end we will present the results – videos and dances – in a public performance.Lutz GregorFreelanced film director.
