RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING FILMS PRESENTS:"MOTHERS' DAY" a Short film by Eliza Fernbach & "HAIKU” a short video by Kristen MangioneThree Screenings:Saturday October 24th, 2009 3pmSaturday November 7th, 2009 2pmSaturday November 21st, 2009 2pmEliza Fernbach’s fierce film abstraction of Canadian Writer Anne Simpson's poem "!" depicts the grim interior violence of a Mother’s loss during war. It is based on the mythological Greek Queen Hekuba who lost all 19 of her children to conflict and was transformed into a black dog by the Gods for avenging the death of her youngest son. A Poetry film shot in 35mm, 16mm and video with screen projections and miniature photography, the piece is a non-linear panorama of loss, grief and the consequences of revenge.Kristen Mangione's sublime video contemplation of the atmosphere of peace, as captured at a Zen retreat, serves as a counterpoint in form, tone and style. Mangione, a Choreographer and Dancer, created the video as part of a series on the Seasons with the landscape of the retreat house as a constant. Serendipitous moments of stillness and storm are recorded as Mangione documented a dancer's exploration of the landscape.
