I first belly danced in my mother's womb at the Berkeley Fiddler's Convention in 1969 and I haven't stopped shimmying since then. I first performed on stage with a live Greek bouzouki orchestra with a costume pinned to my diapers. Starting at the age of seven, I performed every night under the benevolent shadow of the ancient Acropolis with my mother, Belly Dance Pioneer Rhea of Greece, and my sister Piper - Belly Dancer of the Year 2000 - in the tourist tavernas of Plaka in Athens, Greece, as well as appearing in the Pickle Family Circus in San Francisco where my musician father Phil Marsh (of the Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle band and Country Joe and the Fish) was bandleader. Throughout my life I have straddled the international worlds of belly dance, circus arts and academia, graduating from Wellesley College and earning a doctorate in Medieval French Literature from UPenn, performing and teaching my empowering "Daughters of Rhea" style belly dance all the while. As an adult I have performed and taught extensively at art centers, spiritual retreats and gala events throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia, including Kripalu in the Berkshires, Victoria Theater in Singapore, the Taipei Arena in Taiwan, Circus Flora and Cirque Passion. My acts include balancing a tray of candles on my head while dancing (a feat I first performed on stage with my mom at the age of 7), balancing a sword on the tip of a dagger clutched in my jaws while descending into a full split, a romantic aerial trapeze duet, an aerial hoop fusion dance act, dancing atop water glasses, vaudevillian clowning, spoken word/snaking hips performance poetry, and more. Three years ago I imported a beautiful and elegant little circus tent from France and in it we present our European family circus show as well as rent it out for artistic or wedding events. My art follows my heart, and my heart follows my the whispers and shouts of my instinct and imagination. I love to fuse, cross disciplines, subvert conventions, and collaborate with an eclectic variety of musicians and artists.
