Richi Owaki explores the new relationship between media technology and the body, seeking tools and expressions to cross the difference between physical expression and information. Born 1977 in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Studied under Masao Komura at Tohoku University of Art & Design. Since 1999 I was a member of the artist group Dumb Type and participated in touring performances such as ‘memorandum’. As an individual artist, I have also presented a number of installations and performance works. From 2003 to 2024, I worked as a ‘media truge’ at the Yamaguchi Centre for Arts and Media [YCAM], YCAM InterLab. With particular expertise in media technology and physical expression, I propose ideas and realisations in the field of production. I have also independently studied various forms of physical expression. Since 1993 I have studied the Satsuma Biwa Kinshinryu style with Arai shisui. From 2007 to 2024, I founded and run the alternative space Studio IMAICHI in Yamaguchi City. Here, I will promote and educate the public about community-based art. installation work ‘skinslides’ was recommended by the Jury of the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival (2012) and won the Jaguar Asia Tech Art Prize at the Taipei International Art Fair (2015).
