Nestled inside the enclosing waters of its protective lake, Knockadoon island was once completely surrounded by the waters of Lough Gur... before it was lowered 5 metres by the English in the 1850's. "Guir" means just that - "warm nest."And here, between 4500 and 3800 BCE, early Celto-Pictish and newly-arriving Carpathian settlers created the first successful post-glacial colony. Between the waters of the Camoge and the Morningstar Rivers (the "Tigris and Euphrates" of Ireland) these settlers within 3000 years had built the largest stone circle in Ireland (Grange Lios), a successful cattle and agriculture-based "tuath"/kinship culture, and a solid ritual landscape with a organised spiritual leadership and a symmetrical ritual landscape stretching out for kilometres... as far as you can see in every direction.Ireland grew from here... from the island of Knockadoon in Lough Gur.
