After the Lobbytalk at DTW!

Last Tuesday evening, I connected to the Lobby of Dance Theater Workshop from Geneva via dance-techTV and skype with various guest panelist to share our ideas on new media and the distribution of information and knowledge about dance (name it audience development, marketing, open process etc) I was happy to contribute with my ideas about the dance-tech.net project although it was hard to keep up with the diverse ideas of the panelist and the many directions presented by the topic. It was also very early morning for me. Claudia La Rocco was one of the panelists and this is what she wrote on her blog: Tuesday night we had our second Performance Club event of the month - and a bit of a strange one for me to offer a critique of, since it was a Lobby Talks panel at DTW that included me. Organized by the choreographer Chase Granoff, the very broad topic centered on how new technologies are shaping the dance world - from marketing to social networking to criticism and more, and the panelists included bloggers, artists, and marketing/new media directors. Several P. Clubbers were in attendance, and several were on the panel, and I’ll leave it mostly to them if they want to deconstruct the evening (though I’m happy to answer questions!). Read the post in her blog: http://blogs.wnyc.org/culture/2009/06/11/performance-club-talk-talk-talk/

Tomorrow is the day of the Volt festival in Uppsala. Christian and I will set up a CCTV music installation there, and I went there today to hang the camera, and speak to the caretaker/technician. He was very easy to work with. After a while, when we'd been climbing, hanging, arranging, and discussing, another technician showed up. He was not very easy to work with. I know how the patriarchy works but it's quite rare to get such an obvious example. The second technician (male of course) started asking the first technician about my stuff. I replied - because it was my stuff we/they were talking about. The second technician didn't give a shit about me. He just kept addressing the first technician, and didn't even look at me. Totally rude but true. The second technician and I went down with the lift to put something on the floor to be able to find the camera focus. I went off the lift to put my bag there, and while I was on the floor (like 15 s), the second technician went up again, leaving me on the floor totally unable to do anything. He started messing about with the focus and zoom, and of course he had no fine motor control at all. Maximum or minimum of everything. I tried to instruct him from the floor until I realised how ridiculous this was, and got annoyed. I asked him quite roughly if I could come up. When I was up there, he wouldn't agree on which was the zoom, and which was the focus. It was so obvious to him that he would know better. Grrrrr....Well, at least I felt quite competent, and in the end he had to admit that I knew my own gear better than he did.

New Media Meeting 2009

So, my third year at New Media Meeting (NMM) in Norrköping, Sweden. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. They moved it from September to May this year, and it doesn't seem to have turned out as well as they were hoping. The sun's been shining bright, and people just want to be outside eating ice-cream all day and night. Even worse is that there are hardly any artists here this year. Last year and the year before that, the whole foyer was filled with funny little installations and interactive art works. The makers of all the stuff were hanging around, and it became a meeting place where we could chat and get inspired by each other's crazy projects. This year, there are only two video works running, and no artists to speak to. Only us, of course, and our lab hasn't turned out very well either. We were supposed to play around with Kalypso but none of us understands how it works really. We managed to get some blobs on the floor but that was basically it. Before I arrived yesterday, the others tried to connect with Dresden, Madrid and Prague but it was no success. Apparently, they could see us but we couldn't see them. We really have to learn how this program works. At least, it seems like we'll be able to go to Madrid to see the rest of the guys, and hopefully learn something. AND we have a working space now, finally! Now, let's hope for some good music tonight so that I can dance, dance, dance... :)

On Friday, May 29, 2009 BALTAN Laboratories hosts the third in its series of BATLAN GOES NATLAB presentations at the former Philips NatLab at Strijp S in Eindhoven. Curated and moderated by Telcosystems, the focus of this session will be on different strategies of spatialisation in audiovisual art and how this alters our understanding of technology-driven forms of art.

Photo: Boudewijn Bollmann (c)

Norwegian artist HC Gilje explores how audiovisual technology can be used to transform, create, expand, amplify and interpret physical spaces. He will present the research he has been doing over the last three years during his research fellowship at the National Academy of the Arts in Bergen (KHIB). HC Gilje writes regularly on these matters on his blog 'Conversations with Spaces'. The Italian sound designer Lorenzo Brusci will give a presentation on his work in the field of immersive sound and experience design. He is (co-)founder of the applied acoustics division of B&C Speakers Architettura Sonora, the environmental design team Giardino Sonoro and the studio Sound and Experience Design. And Telcosystems will present their latest work 12_Series, which they developed at BALTAN Laboratories as part of the Poème Numérique investigations.

DANCE:FILM

Hi,the lovely Scottish capital Edinburgh is currently running its very own DANCE:FILM festival with great success!!! Dancebase curator Steph Wright has put an exciting program mix of famous films like Swing Time and Flashdance as well as screenings of independent and international screendance makers together. I went to see the two programs 'Dance With Camera' and 'Dance For Camera' and was blown away by the eclectic collection of high quality screendance. I happy to see that 'Screendance' is becoming a known genre that has grown from filming your friend with a camcorder to creating proper concepts that combine film techniques with skillful movements.Much more to come but here's what's happening in the next couple of days!GYPSY - Monday 25th May 18.00A super rare screening of Mervyn LeRoy's 1962 Gypsy on the big screen! Shipped all the way from LA for this one off showing, make sure you don't miss it! Book your tickets here.Invitation to the Dance: Body & Taboo - Tuesday 26th May 18.15In 2005 Gerda König, a German choreographer who has muscular dystrophy, brought together people with disabilities and able-bodied dancers, many of them from impoverished shanty towns, in an 8-week workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. The film documents the artistic process of creating a performance with such a heterogeneous group of people and at the same time gives the viewer an insight into the culture and social conditions of this East African city.EXTRA Flashdance: 80s tastic Jazz workshop, Sat 30th May 18.00-20.00Due to popular demand, we've had to put on an extra session of the Flashdance: 80s tastic Jazz workshop which was sold out and there's still a few places left so get booking here!TINY DANCE FILMSThe Tiny Dance Films kiosks are in the foyers of both Filmhouse and Dance Base. They're the intriguing looking black boxes with headphones on. Go check them out!DANCE:FILM Facebook Fan PageBecome a fan of DANCE:FILM on Facebook here.
