In 2016 Metabody_Toulouse invites in the city three european partners.

The Quai des Savoirs organises the event in the frame of the European Researchers’ Night.

K Danse and the Quai des Savoirs organize, in this context, a complete program of performances, installations, concerts, meetings and micro workshops. (see detailed programme).

METABODY is a European project that questions the homogenisation of expressions induced by current information and control technologies, which place unprecedented threats to plurality and to fundamental rights and freedoms by reducing all our actions to predictable behaviours, and proposes to reinvent them highlighting the role and diversity of embodied expression through a new concept of interactive architecture that transforms in all its physical and digital aspects, constituting dynamic, participatory and performative environments for outdoors and indoors, an emergent and indeterminate space, a METATOPIA.
METABODY is a project supported by the European Commission (2013-2016) and the participation of numereous partners in 10 countries, coordinated by Reverso (Spain).

THÆTA is the third performance of StratoFyzika’s Shadows Trilogy. With new collaborations in sound and interactivity (sensors building, coding), the concept still steeped in the subconscious realms and dealing with the ego: the dark and light shadow aspects of self (as in the first two parts of the trilogy) but also on the edge of the conscious, waking self; visions on the edge of sleep, whispy light shadows, multi-dimensional geometric objects, sudden sound as if from the halls of a mind in a dream state. 
This liminal zone is a state referred to as Hypnogogia. 

THÆTA embodies this borderland state. 

All merge onto the stage, interactively; body dynamics, auditory sensations and visuals function as the culmination of parts into one constellation in live performance.


Interactive Stratum

The aim of introducing interactivity in our work is to engage a live performative environment where the movement is able to affect the sound and the image as well as with those elements. To accomplish this task in a meaningful way, something beyond a 1 to 1 connection between sensors and effects parameters should be achieved. Data is not information until it is analyzed and transformed. In this direction, different pattern and gesture recognition algorithms are applied to the values coming from the sensors in order to extract the key steps out of the choreography. This technique allows the performer to establish a set of movements to create a new language within the scope of a particular performance.

Sensing Stratum

Body-mounted sensors: three-axial accelerometers and a gyroscope, are being used as the primary sensing mechanism for quantification of temporal variations in motion and gesture. THÆTA uses a specifically designed prototype of wearable electronic devices whose main module is based on Arduino Fio, and an x-bee module for wireless communication.

Sound Stratum

The soundtrack for THÆTA is composed of abstract atmospheres and drones which at a certain point morph into rhythmic patterns and lead the piece to its most intense conclusion. The sound synthesis process is connected to the sensors' signals and the overall quantity of movement is mapped to the occurrence of sound, which shapes refinements with movement data’s details. The sonification of images and movements aims to hypnotize the audience with various tricks, from noise cacophonies to otoacustic emissions - a physiological reaction to a couple of pure tones that makes the ear hair cells resonate and produce a tone.

The main sound sources have been selected from the archives of a free experimental sound internet library, curated and maintained by Thalamus Lab. The project launched an open call called Experimental Sound Lab and many artists from different countries contributed to create a collaborative library.

Visuals Stratum

The stage is designed by the visuals around and together with the performer, investigating the liminal zone through the use of live sketch techniques as well as morphing shapes modeling, audio-driven geometric patterns and pre-shot shadows characters appearences. The projections narrative takes the shape of a path, sinking into the black subconscious world, giving birth to a night creature, shaping its visions and then re-emerging to face the sharp cold touch of the light beam.

Over the whole performance experience, specific interactivity is being used to let gestures drive specific visual impressions. The interactive part of the visuals shows a complex system, where the interaction of a large number of individuals creates a new entity with a different behavior than just the addition of the single ones. This emergent behavior is modeled following the classic flocking rules written by Craig Reynolds in 1986 (separation, alignment and cohesion). To those we added a few more like a bounding area, a noise field or a perlin random walker.

Movement Stratum

The dancer’s torgue, bend, twisting and qualities of movement is the consequence of the mind directing the body’s reactions on/into the audiovisual environment. In THÆTA, the movement is focused on the embodiment of a character which is in contact with light and dark shadows, traveling through the hypnogogic state via an (imagined) Theta wave state. The choreography on it’s own is a movement map written through common brainstorm and then broken down into sections either with specific set choreography and/or an improvised score sometimes employing the Atavistic Technique.

P_B / P.A   is an performance exercise… I try to think about the concept of “control-no control” from electronic devices attached to the body. This from the concepts of generativity and autonomous entities, as a way to reflect on the process of creation and production of art work, comprising work with dancer and technology as a global system where this concepts involved

The reactive system is a electronic sequencer with light sensor and speaker sound with the idea of clothing or accessory type bracelet, scarf, bracelet, etc.

Interactive System: + microcontroller pressure sensor. This is a reading on the Processing platform that by sending the signal is set to a range of sensor accuracy from XBEE protocol, data are extrapolated in a geometric graph.

The condition is based on the parameter “more light at higher pressure and smaller, less” going from 255 to 0 or vice versa. The graph comes from a structure ellipse, a rect, and line ranging achurando the screen as a digital pen set in “if” (If) and millis timer that is changing as visually the same hardware generating a graph where converge in the body itself, the physical and digital space as geometric and mathematical entities.

Here we (*) are again. The young Art.On.Wires festival opens its doors for the second time.

Like last year, we arrived in a very warm and wellcoming atmosphere here in Oslo. Not just because the sun is shining...

Today the day starts with an introduction talk by Alexander Eichhorn, the founder of this festival. 12249504065?profile=original

The day is reserved for talks and lectures. People introduce themself and their work in general or more specific, talk a little about the workshops they will give and answer some questions.

Marko Ritter (D), co-founder of the company intolight, starts the lecture about his work and research. Intolight got a grand from the E.C.A.S. network to develope their project CHET (collective hedonistic toolkid). One part of this software mainly based on vvvv is switchboy. It's a toolkid for Vjing. You basically can do everything with it. The software will be open-source and Marko hopes for many people who will contribute new patches for switchboy in order to develope this multi-functional toolkid. You can do mind mapping, project 3D graphics, Videos and all the things a good Vj programm should be able to provide.
Marko will give a workshop together with Valérie-Françoise Vogt for vvvv - An introduction into the Multipurpose Toolkit on Thursday and Sunday.

Michal gives us a short overview about their projects, one is the international festival coded cultures. Jacob Korn talks about his main projects over the last years, beside being a musician and producer for Techno and House music. Automatic clubbing is one of it. Now called I.D.A (interactive dancefloor application) which is a collaborative instrument. In the beginning it would run with kalypso and max.msp stand alone. He collaborates with different people to realize several performances, such as Frieder Weiß, Matthias Härtig, intolight. Next project is Harmony Universe. An instrument mainly for 12249506498?profile=originalchildren. They learn playing with music and rhythm through an interactive software and visuals on the floor (for instance). It is a collaborative instrument, so if the kids play well, it sounds well...max4life and vvvv is used for the software stuff. Another baby of Jacob is Uncanny Heroes - a workshop based development for a tool to let people interact with the sound and visuals they're confronted with in a normal party situation.

Lars Graugaard is basically talking about his great wish to have a software which does everything for him. Well, who doesn't. His longstanding research in music, working as a composer and programmer brought him to a constantly improving "organism" to make music and performances happen. One software, huge possibilities where and how to use it. Together with his students he enlarges the 12249507075?profile=originalnecessary patches for max.msp. Lars' aim is to have a flexible system to work with many different instruments and their very specific characteristics.

Working on a huge project called "world opera" Jason is connected to 6 different countries in order to create and research how to make a world opera happen. Even if it is just about milli seconds still a lot of artists (musicians, dancers...) have problems to interact over camera to a different place in the world. Where am I? What is your time, what is mine?

Last but not least Brock Craft talks about his work. Brock is an Interaction Designer, artist, and specialist in Physical Computing and Information Visualization. This edition of Test_Lab will showcase new technology-inspired modes of live musical performance that radically transform the performer’s relationship with the audience.

The lyrics to Daft Punk’s “Technologic” – “Touch it, bring it, pay it, watch it, turn it, leave it, start, format it” – allude to the omnipresence of technology in our daily lives and the many different ways in which we engage with it. At a Daft Punk live show, however, it’s predominantly the artists themselves that interact with technology, through musical interfaces. The audience, by contrast, passively observes or dances but rarely touches, brings, starts or formats any of the technology involved in the performance. Yet there are artists who explore technology’s potential to radically break with the traditional performer-audience relationship.

According to Chris Salter, the concert hall has shifted “from a passive arena of listening to an interactive zone of improvisation between sound-making technical apparatuses and their players” (Entangled, 2010). The exciting new modes of performance resulting from this shift have recently gained much attention in publications and conferences. Exactly how these new performance modes affect the performer-audience relationship has however hardly been explored. What does it mean to be an active listener in an “interactive zone of improvisation”? And what does the audience gain from it all?

This edition of Test_Lab will showcase new technology-inspired modes of live musical performance that radically transform the performer’s relationship with the audience. While some of these projects and performances, such as CrowdDJ - Tom Laan, and Nomadic Sound System - Ben Newland; turn the audience into co-performers, others, like Microscopic Opera -Matthijs MunnikEvolving Spark Network - Edwin van der Heide and SPASM 2.0 - V2_Lab; give rise to entirely new modes of listening. Artist Daan Roosegaarde and V2_Lab are looking for two fashion designers (M/F) to contribute to the 'Intimacy' series.

'Intimacy White' (2009), the first dress in the series, is made out of smart foil that becomes transparent when electrified. The distance of a spectator to the dress determines the level of transparency. This first dress received a lot of media attention and is considered highly successful. V2_Lab and Daan Roosegaarde now intend to make a series of 'Intimacy' dresses, each playing with a different material to create a sensual play of shared control.

'Intimacy Lotus' is a new heat-sensitive material by Studio Roosegaarde, responding and physically moving to the subtlest amount of warmth. We invite one designer to create a new interactive dress with the Lotus foil.

'Intimacy Black' is the dark sister of 'Intimacy White'.

We invite one designer to create accessories with the black foil that become
transparent when electrified.

Daan Roosegaarde says: ‘Technology is used here not merely functional but also as a tool to create intimacy as well as privacy on a direct, personal level ... which in our contemporary tech society is becoming increasingly important.’

In order to take this step from one dress to a series of fashion items, V2_Lab and Daan Roosegaarde are looking for:

  • Recently graduated or senior year fashion designers (M/F);
  • He or she must be able to participate in thought process along the lines set out by V2_Lab and Studio Roosegaarde in the preliminary stages and therefore must be a good team player;
  • He or she must be ambitious and determined to achieve our request for success;
  • The project starts on 1 May 2010. It is a full-time position for a period of 8 weeks.

What we offer:

Our movement-interactive video projection installation Canvas will be set up in the Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer at Southbank Centre, London, during Shadoworks, a concert by the London Sinfonietta curated by the London Sinfonietta Collective, on Thursday 03 June at 7:30 p.m. The concert consists of works by Hans Abrahamsen, Aldo Clementi, Dai Fujikura, Larry Goves, and György Ligeti. The context for the concert additionally includes an electronic music piece by Alex Cook and Daniel Harle using the software Music Mouse on an old Atari 1040ST, a dance animation film by Katie Keeble and Ni Wen, synesthetic sound-interactive video by Sion Fletcher, post-concert musical miniatures by Howard Skempton, and our own dance-installation Just Hanging Around. This promises to be a fascinating multimedia art and technology evening!

Call for a fashion designer for “Intimacy”

Artist Daan Roosegaarde and V2_Lab are looking for a fashion designer (M/F) to help realise “Intimacy”, a next step in wearable technology.Artist Daan Roosegaarde, known for his interactive artworks such as ‘Dune’ and ‘Sustainable Dance Floor’, is expanding his artistic and innovative horizon to include fashion. In close collaboration with V2_ Lab he will be developing electronic fashion that becomes visually transparent according to the amount of personal intimacy involved.The dress ‘Intimacy’ is made out of smart foil that becomes transparent when electrified. The workshop is : Lunar Outpost A Workshop on Wearable Art and Interactive Performance May 25 – June 5, 2009 friend Lunar Outpost on facebook. Herberger College Dance and the School of Art at Arizona State University are offering a two-week workshop on Wearable Art and Interactive Performance. The workshop will take place on the Tempe Campus of Arizona State University from May 25 through June 5, 2009. Workshop leaders from Herberger College Dance and the School of Art include: John D. Mitchell, mediated performance designer, Galina Mihaleva costume and fashion designer, Hilary Harp, media artist and sculptor, joined by a special guest, Keiko Courdy, French artist and director of KI transdisciplinary performance structure. In response to initiatives to create a fully occupied operational base on the moon by 2024, the theme for this year's workshop is: Lunar Outpost. As artists how do we respond to extreme environments that are so unlike our home environment? At the Lunar Outpost people will experience micro gravity, a different atmospheric propagation of sound, an essentially black-and-white environment, and a profound sense of loneliness. Workshop participants will explore emergent electronic technologies for performance and installation framed by the theme Lunar Outpost. Edinburgh Tonight we have another show of ‘Mortal Engine’ at the Edinburgh International Festival. Compared with ‘Glow’, my initial collaboration with Australian dance company ‘Chunky Move’ this piece is quite large scale. A heavy set for our six dancers, with pneumatically moving stage sectors makes it quite challenging to set up in only two days. After a few minor disasters like a broken laser audio interface we got it all fixed for the premiere on Sunday which was very well received. (Preview - Review) Mortal Engine is performed on a large steep stage. It is mainly lit by video projectors, graphics generated from and closely connected to dancers movements. The visual world is quite abstract, not really video on it’s own, more like a very graphical and dynamic stage lighting. The general lighting pattern is to light the stage and mask out the dancers, putting our marvelous dancers in a distant alienating world. Illuminating a moving object This reversed lighting approach actually got a funny new meaning just recently. A german company keeps contacting us (i.e. different collaborator, not Chunky Move), holding high their patent for ‘system and method of illuminating an object’. It is about video-tracking (=detection means) based lighting of dancers (=3D moving objects) with a video projector (=radiation source). I hereby admit to be having done similar in the past. It is a more or less trivial method several media art groups were using in the past to do ‘on body projections’, The company is a ‘spin off’ of an arts project and claims to market the whole concept exclusively. In the arts world there is always a race for being the first one to use a new approach, but not sure whether patents suit the dance tech world too much. Anyway, Mortal Engine will be save cause the ‘moving objects’ are masked out of any illumination. This weekend ‘Mortal Engine’ will go to the Festival in Groningen, Netherlands, performances on Saturday and Sunday (23, 24. of August) Tanzmesse Düsseldorf Together with Emily Fernandez we will be presenting a lecture / demonstration about our approaches into digital dance performance at the Tanzmesse at the end of August (27-30). It will take place at the studio of ‘Theater der Klänge’ , Winkelsfelderstrasse 21 as part of the open studio, interleaved with presentations and dance films by Theater der Klänge and Christian Ziegler. More fun in a Norwegian parking lot Our Onskebron Installation is reopening for the winter season. This installation sits in a parking lot of Norwegian city ‘Sandnes’, basically a large Walk-On LED screen with movement showing interactive motion graphics generated from visitors movements. The installation was up for four month earlier this year. It was great fun watching couples starting to dance on the installation in the middle of the night, families going there for their Sunday afternoon walk, or the local kindergarten coming for their regular visit on Monday morning. After those months the installation was pretty much drowned and quite a few of the segments had stopped working due to the harsh weather conditions. Now it will be reinstalled, using slices of the floor screen you have seen at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Bejing. As the sparks fly upwards...

As the sparks fly upwards... is really on it's way now. The piece, which uses Isadora to bring live dancers and film clips together, had it's first showing last Friday with very positive results.Lights are attached to dancers' bodies which are then tracked in the space by a camera and used by Isadora to trigger specific pre-recorded film clips. The movement is the same for the live and filmed dancers but the order is completely different. Sometimes in unison, sometimes in canon, sometimes completely out of sync.Initial feedback includes comparisons to photographic dark rooms watching images develop, appraisals of the dynamic, fluid movement and claims of 'this is the future of screendance'.View the Isadora output...

Join us on Thursday, June 26 at 7PM for the Upgrade! New York launch of Interactivos?: Better Than the Real Thing. R&D OpenLab fellow Zach Lieberman will set the scene with a presentation about Interactivos? and its beginnings at Medialab-Prado. Discussions of the real, the fake, and spoofing will ensue, with a presentation by The Yes Men. Informal discussion and a reception will follow. Eyebeam projects on display, that evening, will include BoozBot by Eyebeam senior fellow Jeff Crouse and Eyebeam Production Lab fellow David Jimison.

Upgrade! is an international, emerging network of autonomous nodes united by art, technology, and a commitment to bridging cultural divides. Upgrade! New York has been in existence since April 1999 and partnered with Eyebeam in March 2000. Upgrade! meetings present new media projects, engage in informal critique, and foster dialogue and collaboration between individual artists.

Join us daily between June 27 and July 12, from 12 – 6PM to witness the transformation of Eyebeam’s main space into a lab for the creation of interactive art projects.

From an open-call, Eyebeam selected nine new projects to be realized by artists from around the world, with the collaboration of Eyebeam resident artists and fellows and over two dozen very skilled artists, engineers, musicians, programmers, designers, and hackers (also selected from an open call). The projects investigate interactivity in all of its forms, and usually feature a mix of hardware tinkering, software coding, and conceptual hacking.

During the intensive two-week Interactivos? workshop, the lab will be open and the public are welcome to drop in, see the artists and collaborators at work, and participate in discussions, critiques, and other social activities investigating interactivity in the context of this year’s Interactivos? theme: the blurry line between the real and the fake. A full schedule of events will follow. On July 12 the lab will be transformed into an exhibition, Double Take, which will be on view through August 9.

Interactivos? was initiated two years ago by the Medialab-Prado program and the Madrid City Council. This is the first time it has taken place outside Spain.

June 28: Camerautomata Charlie walking tour

Date: Saturday, June 28, 2:30PM

As part of the Tourists and Travelers exhibition and in conjunction with Interactivos?: Better than the real thing, come see how a robotic duck can take better tourist photos than you can. Join the guided tour of tourist sites with the magical image-digesting robotic duck Charlie. The tour will start at Eyebeam at 2:30PM (participants are encouraged to check out the exhibition before setting off!) when they’ll join the artist and the duck as they walk and take public transportation to Bethesda Terrace, Central Park, where they will then wander around the park with other tourists. The tour will take about 2 hours. Participants may also meet the group at the Bethesda Terrace at around 4PM.

Tuesday, June 1: Illegal Billboard Workshop with and The Anti-Advertising Agency. Presenter: Eyebeam senior fellow Steve Lambert.

Activists estimate that half the billboards in New York City are illegal. Worth millions in profit, outdoor advertising has become a corporate black market that doesn’t stop short of breaking the law to get your attention. On July 1, the Anti-Advertising Agency and Rami Tabello of will lead a free workshop on how to identify illegal advertising and get it taken down. Canadian activist group is responsible for the removal of more than over 100 illegal billboards in Toronto. Rami Tabello will reveal how the billboard industry gets away with breaking the law and will offer suggestions on what New Yorkers can do to stop it locally. Thursday, July 3: Eyebeam senior fellows Steve Lambert and Jeff Crouse will lead a workshop on A Basic Sentence Markup Language (ABSML)—an artist statement generator—and a new email spam-inspired project to Keep an Army Recruiter Busy.

Tuesday, July 8: New Tools for Collaborative Practice. Presenters: Eyebeam senior fellow Steve Lambert; Mushon Zer Aviv and Dan Pfeiffer; NOR_/D: Eyebeam Production Lab fellow Addie Wagenknecht with Stefan Hechenberger.

  • Subversion (SVN): a version control system used to maintain current and historical versions of files for source code, web pages, and/or documentation—like a wiki, but for code.
  • Shiftspace: an open source layer above any website. It seeks to expand the creative possibilities currently provided through the web, allowing for the creation of online contexts built in and on top of websites.
  • TouchKit: a modular multitouch development kit with the aim to make multitouch readily available in an open source fashion. Learn the basics of how to set up your own multitouch system, the supplies you need and where to get them. We supply the open source API, schematics, source code and demo applications.

Thursday, July 10: What do artists and audiences think of interactivity? Presenter: Beryl Graham.

As part of Interactivos?, and in preparation for the opening of the exhibition Double Take, we present a lecture on how artists and audiences consider interactivity, led by Professor of New Media, Beryl Graham. Examples of high and low-tech projects in gallery and publically-sited contexts will be shown, and a rousing discussion with artists based on their own experiences will follow. This evening is in conjunction with Eyebeam research partner CRUMB, the resource for curators of new media art, based in the UK.


July 7: Digital Day Camp begins

Dates: July 7 – 25, Monday – Thursday, 1 – 5PM in the Education Lab

In July 2008, Eyebeam will produce its ninth annual Digital Day Camp (DDC) program for NYC public high school students. DDC is a paid three-week summer intensive program, this year focused on the theme of Better Than the Real Thing—taking off from the Interactivos? workshop series.

Selected participants will explore the tension in distinguishing “real” from “fake”. Among the questions to be addressed: What is authentic in the real of the digital? Can something be so fake that it becomes real? How can hoaxes, recreations, and illusions be used aesthetically and critically? DDC 2008 will investivage this through the creation of interactive art projects, which will join the projects produced during Interactivos? in the exhibition, Double Take, July 29 – August 9. DDC participants will publicly present their final projects on July 29, 7PM at Eyebeam.

The Eyebeam Roadshow is looking for hosts for its Fall 2008 tour. The Eyebeam Roadshow consists of a vibrant series of mini-lectures and skill-share workshops, from the distinguished roster of artists who have worked within Eyebeam’s Labs.

Lecture topics may include: art and technology; copyright; open-source hardware and software; public space; hacking as an art form; how to write the world’s worst artist statement; creating tools for dissent; and other nascent projects developed at Eyebeam.

HeHe’s Pollstream – Nuage Vert wins 2008 Golden Nica

HeHe (Eyebeam alumni Helen Evans and Heiko Hansen) Pollstream – Nuage Vert: http://www.nuagevert.orghttp// transforms clouds into projection surfaces. As such, these indefinable, constantly and chaotically changing products of the condensation of water vapor become media bearing political ideas and messages. Or aestheticized symbols of environmental pollution caused by carbon emissions. Pollstream – Nuage Vert was developed in collaboration with experts in laser technology, computer science, electrical engineering, energy generation and air quality monitoring. Development commenced in 2002 and concluded in February 2008 with a performance in Helsinki that demonstrated how art is capable of encompassing an entire city—its public sphere, its industry and its inhabitants—and unfolding sociopolitical relevance.

Pollstream – Nuage Vert is the recipient of the Prix Ars Electronica 2008 Golden Nica in the Hybrid Art category.
