Ruth Cathlow’s definition of the artist role in her book Artists Re:thinking the Blockchain:
“Artists are good in mediating abstractions for our perceptions through play, open exploration and supposition. They can tolerate, even relish, extended encounters with difference, contradiction, muddle and slippage between symbolic and material possibilities without rushing to usefulness or simplicity. They have a kitbag of methods and processes for revealing the practical affordances and animal spirit of a subject, medium or technology. They know that a way to get to know something that does’n yet exist is to collaborate with its possibilities and to do something/anything with it or about it. And by doing so, they materialize and shape what it will be, allowing many other people to access, approach and reach out to it with different parts of themselves:”

URGENT WANTED: 2 FEMALE DANCERS, 1 FEMALE ACTOR,

FOR EXPERIMENTAL PERFORMANCE PIECE

DAY OF THE PERFORMANCE: MAY 23RD at LA CASA ENCENDIDA, MADRID (SPAIN)

-2 female dancers, 1 female actor (English is OK and/or Spanish speaking is perfect)  to be a part of an experimental piece, outside of the 'comfort zone' in an art exhibition space in Madrid

Description / Concept

The piece is created by Elena Bajo, a visual artist who has exhibited internationally and

focuses on the social, political aspects of the site in the city of Madrid. Bajo combines performance with large scale installations to investigate the political and social conditions of change in post-industrial structures, creating site specific work and a space of collective action.

The performers will be required to perform in the space. They will be required to do both improvised and choreographed movements determined before hand with the artist. The generator of the piece is a political text/poem.

This political text-manifesto will be handed to the performers and it will be used to generate their individual choreography (in the case of the dancers), and the scripts (in the case of the actors)

Total duration of the performance around 20 min.

I am preparing a performance at La Casa Encendida, the opening is the May 23, the curator is Juan Canela. I'm looking for 3 women performers: two dancers who are interested in creating their own choreography, solo (the dancers)  and her own script (for the actress) starting with an anarchist text ongoing work fruit of my artistic research. You should create a choreography or a script 2-3 minutes long and it will be shown in a 15-20min performance. The total duration of the solo piece that the performer should prepare based on the text is just around 1-2 min (that will be looped in different ways throughout the performance, 20 mins in total). The piece consists of a solo part, rehearsed and a collective-improvised part unrehearsed.

None of the performers will know what the others are presenting until the moment of the performance . I would like to work with performers who can work the concept of exhaustion in dance (Andrei Lepecki) and performance (Becket the quadrant)  non-movement and still movement, more postmodern and conceptual, more absence than presence ....

Conceptual line, aware of the postmodernist discourse and technique,  Yvonne Rayner, Trisha Brown, Laban technique...etc

REHEARSALS: 2  days, 2 hour/day rehearsals and1 run-through the day of the performance or the day before.

If you are interested in this project please send me an email to elena@elenabajo.com  including a link where I can see your work  as soon as possible. Express briefly why you want to participate in the project. You will be contacted by email to proceed forward. This is quite urgent.

If you don't have a link to video online let me know and I would send you a text fragment to prepare something short 1-2 min that you could record in Skype or video camera or iphone.

This is an event widely advertised and expected to be a good exposure and experience.

You will receive a small payment for your participation, dvd video footage and photos of the performance as well as program credits.  The greatest reward of this project lies in that you're interested in the experience for your work.

Proposal Deadline: 1st October 2013

The ArtEZ Master of Choreography celebrates its 10 years with the publicationInventing Futures, which we see as one ‘object’ of artistic research. Artists, current and former students, and theorists reflect on themes and notions that have emerged in the program as particularly challenging and productive, namely latency, constraint, collaboration, failure and trust. These are suggested as prisms through which one could think, imagine and invent future(s), in particular for choreography and institutional practice-as-research.

Together with the launching of the book a gathering is organized, which is an initiative of the ArtEZ Master of Choreography and Bertha Bermudez / ICKamsterdam, with the support of the ArtEZ Professorship Theory in Art. The aim is to extend the discussion on artistic research to the inter/national field.

On 2nd December a Roundtable Discussion with guests from Holland and abroad will take place, addressing and problematizing Artistic Research. The launching of the book and a reception in the evening will follow the discussion. Precise times to be announced later.

On 3rd December working sessions and seminars proposed and led by artists and theorists will take place.

Theme and Context:

Compared to the late 80s and early 2000s it has become harder to foster institutional experimentation and change from within. The production of measureable, ‘understandable’ and profitable products have, under the guise of the discourse of innovation, to a large extent become sine qua non conditions for validation and funding in the arts and the humanities. These conditions, one could argue, are not exactly favorable for artistic research, in particular when this is thought of as the production or invention of ‘problems’ (Cvejić, 2013) and not as avenues leading towards solutions that follow current fashion or pre- determined guidelines for their mainstream acceptance and transferability.

A plethora of artistic research educational programmes and centres have emerged in the last few years. And yet, the function and value of artistic research remain too vague, as it is understood and used for different and often contradictory purposes per institution (educational/academic, economic, stylistic, market-oriented etc.). One could thus arguably claim that artistic research is becoming more detached from the artists and their artistic processes/methodologies and more attached to institutional needs and requirements.

Against this background, Inventing Futures proposes a gathering in which artists and theorists from within and outside of institutions can expose, discuss and experiment with their understandings and doings of artistic research. (How) can educational institutions be with and within artistic research? How can artistic research be (re)invented?

AN INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION AT SCIENCE GALLERY, TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN EXPLORING THE VIBRANT VIBRATORY WORLD OF OSCILLATORS, OSCILLATIONS AND FEEDBACK.

Call for Proposals Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland is seeking proposals for an upcoming major exhibition OSCILLATOR

Call Opens: 4th SEPTEMBER Call Closes: 12th OCTOBER Exhibition duration: 7th FEBRUARY 2013 – 14th APRIL 2013

Calling all vibratory beings! Electron wizards, mega-nano-nauts, chemical visionaries, code infinitizers, pendular kineticists, sleep cycle sleuths, and feedback fetishists. OSCILLATOR is a curated exhibition exploring the vibrant vibratory world of oscillators, oscillations, and feedback.

This diverse, interactive show will feature installations and demonstrations ranging from cyclical chemical reactions and swinging bridges to out of control automated pricing schemes and el Niño. We are interested in oscillatory explorations from many different fields and genres, including chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth sciences, biology, mechanics, neurology, mathematics, logic, and the arts.

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW:

Oscillators are ubiquitous, both in human-made systems and in physical, biological, and informational processes. They arise, either by design or by accident, in the presence of interconnected parts and feedback paths. Sometimes they’re a critical component, essential to the correct function of a system, other times they might be a curiosity or a nuisance, or even a catastrophic force. The exhibition will use the idea of the oscillator to bring together a brain-shaking array of experiments, interactive activities, and artworks.

Potential oscillations include: self-oscillating chemical systems like the color/pattern generating Belousov-Zhabotinksii reaction and the mercury beating heart biological oscillators like the ubiquitous circadian rhythms found in nearly all lifeforms, the electric fields created by the ghost knifefish to aid in navigation and communication, the great synchronized choruses of various amphibians, and the complex rhythmic patterns found in human brainwaves oscillatory physical phenomena like the chaotic motions of coupled and multiply articulated pendulums, the marvels of self-assembling nano materials, and disastrous sympathetic resonance in bridges, and buildings geophysical phenomena like el Niño and other weather patterns, continental drift, and cyclical eruptions in geysers and volcanoes math/logic/CS procedures and techniques for creating and probing oscillations, like digital waveform generation, logical games, brain teasers and tautologies, and pseudo random number generators repetitive and oscillating systems used in music, dance, and the visual arts, like guitar feedback, pattern music, cyclical dance forms, and tiling patterns cultural feedback and oscillations like memes, fads, and sampling and reuse Curator and

Advisors:

Attracting a core audience of young adults aged 15-25 from diverse backgrounds Science Gallery ignites a passion for creativity through engaging, dynamic exhibitions and events on major themes ranging from Music and the Body and the future of water to the future of cities. These programmes bring science and technology into dialogue with art and design, and give young adults a taste of the excitement of cutting-edge research and innovation in a stimulating sociable environment. Five factors distinguish Science Gallery from existing models of public engagement with science and technology, including science centers and museums: Our flexibility – five dynamic, changing programmes per year, with no permanent exhibition; Our focus on 15 – 25 year olds as our core target audience bridging high school, university and early stage career; Our open call process – Science Gallery crowd-sources its installations and events on broad themes linking science, technology and the arts; Our fresh approach to connecting the university and the city – bringing university research groups, staff and students into dialogue with the arts and creative community and the public; and Our Leonardo Group – 50 inspirational individuals drawn from the local creative community of scientists, artists, engineers and entrepreneurs who feed ideas into the development of Science Gallery exhibitions and events. Following the success of Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin and significant international interest in this new model of engaging young adults with science, technology and innovation, we received seed support of €1M from Google to launch the Global Science Gallery Network (GSGN), in partnership with leading universities located in urban centres worldwide, with the goal of establishing eight Science Galleries worldwide by 2020.

We would like to thank students from around the globe for their submissions and congratulate the selected filmmakers. This is the first year a Jury's Choice Cash Award has been offered.

LOW LIVES 3

INTERNATIONAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Deadline: March 20, 2011

About Low Lives:
Now entering its third year, Low Lives is an international exhibition of live performance-based works transmitted via the internet and projected in real time at multiple venues throughout the U.S. and around the world. Low Lives examines works that critically investigate, challenge, and extend the potential of performance practice presented live through online broadcasting networks. These networks provide a new alternative and efficient medium for presenting, viewing, and archiving performances. Low Lives is not simply about the presentation of performative gestures at a particular place and time but also about the transmission of these moments and what gets lost, conveyed, blurred, and reconfigured when utilizing this medium. Low Lives embraces works with a lo-fi aesthetic such as low pixel image and sound quality, contributing to a raw, DIY and sometimes voyeuristic quality in the transmission and reception of the work.

Low Lives is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with Chez Bushwick, an artist-run organization based in Brooklyn, New York dedicated to the advancement of interdisciplinary art and performance, with a strong focus on new choreography. Chez Bushwick is co-producing Low Lives 3 and is instrumental in extending the platform’s international reach. Low Lives 3 will feature a ‘spotlight’ on Contemporary Choreography throughout the exhibition program.

Artists working in any media are invited to submit proposals for live performance-based works.

Selection Process:
Each Presenting Partner (see list below) will follow their curatorial process to select one performance to take place at their venue. In addition, 30 artists will be selected from artist proposals responding to this Call for Artists, and will be invited to present their work across the Low Lives network. These performances will be transmitted through the internet from a location of the artists’ choice. The Selections Committee will be comprised of Directors and Curators from each of the Presenting Partner institutions. A full-color catalog and companion DVD with information and an image for each participating artist will be produced for Low Lives 3 after the exhibition takes place.

Artists selected to participate in this exhibition will be instructed on how to transmit their performance through a live online broadcasting network. Performances will be projected in real time across the Low Lives 3 network of Presenting Partners and venues. The exhibit will also be available for online viewing, both in real time as it unfolds across political boundaries and time zones, and on the Low Lives website after the event.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The “Dance Camera Istanbul” 3rd International Dance Film Festival will be held in Istanbul, Turkey in 2010 winter, focusing on video dance, dance on camera, dance photography and dance film screenings. Dance for camera is a fusion art form combining choreography and filmmaking. “Dance Camera Istanbul” annually showcases international dance films, camera re-works and experimental movement-based films by contemporary video artists and choreographers from student to professional level. There is no restriction on the subject.

The festival supports films which investigate the ongoing search for movement and spaces, both in and out of bodies.

The aim of the festival is to build a community for both dancers and filmmakers to come together, to present and promote both local and cutting edge international works, to share ideas, and to provide a collaborative experience for dancers and filmmakers as they work together to produce the final product.

“Dance Camera Istanbul” also focuses on increasing attention and awareness of the collaborations between dance, film, visual arts and music as well as the different mediums and forms of dance. The goals of “Dance Camera Istanbul” are to offer a proper venue in which to screen and share the works, to encourage and educate student dance filmmakers, to spread the knowledge of dance for camera, and to deepen the understanding of Turkish and international dance film practices through panels, practical workshops, discussions and screenings.

We are seeking enthusiastic individuals and groups who are strongly focused (or want to focus) on dance for camera work, video or multimedia installation collaborations. Examples include video dance, dance documentary, adaptation of a stage work or site specific creation, any kind of artistic and experimental work with kinesthetic energy and rhythmic design, and choreographic works that are created specifically for the lens of the camera and include a well- planned editing process. We invite you to be part of the “Dance Camera Istanbul Festival” family. Accepted works will be screened in various venues in Istanbul, throughout Turkey and at the sister event Cinematic Lounge Series. In attendance will be Turkish and international dancers, filmmakers, musicians, photographers, artists and students, as well as both national and international audiences. During the festival, we will organize discussions between the artists, filmmakers and audience after the screenings.

Dance Film Workshops and Lectures/Panels

The workshops will be directed by acclaimed national and international dance and video artists, filmmakers and choreographers who will introduce different approaches to camera, dance and movement as well as providing information about video dance history, archives and links for further research. The workshops will take place at several dance studios and stages as well as access to indoor and outdoor spaces for filming. During the festival month, there will be national and international lectures serious on the dance camera work and the related fields. If you are interested in honoring us with your presence and lecture, please contact with us in regards to your possible topic. It would be our pleasure to start and organize a growing artistic environment and relationship.

Partners and Sponsors

“Dance Camera Istanbul” collaborates with several cultural institutions for visual artists, choreographers, performers and with many other highly appreciated contributors. Our sponsors and partners will be announced in the near future.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information and sponsorship opportunities.

We are looking forward to welcome you all...

Thank you!
